Coalitional Matchings AgEcon
Dimitrov, Dinko; Lazarova, Emiliya A..
A coalitional matching is a two-sided matching problem in which agents on each side of the market may form coalitions such as student groups and research teams who - when matched - form universities. We assume that each researcher has preferences over the research teams he would like to work in and over the student groups he would like to teach to. Correspondingly, each student has preferences over the groups of students he wants to study with and over the teams of researchers he would like to learn from. In this setup, we examine how the existence of core stable partitions on the distinct market sides, the restriction of agents’ preferences over groups to strict orderings, and the extent to which individual preferences respect common rankings shape the...

Core-stable Rings in Second Price Auctions with Common Values AgEcon
Forges, Francoise; Orzach, Ram.
In a common value auction in which the information partitions of the bidders are connected, all rings are core-stable. More precisely, the ex ante expected utilities of rings, at the (noncooperative) sophisticated equilibrium proposed by Einy, Haimanko, Orzach and Sela (Journal of Mathematical Economics, 2002), describe a cooperative game, in characteristic function form, in spite of the underlying strategic externalities. A ring is core-stable if the core of this characteristic function is not empty. Furthermore, every ring can implement its sophisticated equilibrium strategy by means of an incentive compatible mechanism.

Le logmètre : un nouvel outil de saisie des descriptions de carottes ArchiMer
Savoye, Bruno; Floch, Gilbert; Kerbrat, Rene; Apprioual, Ronan.
Core description is used extensively by sedimentologists to yield critical information from sediments. It consists of a naturalistic description of the visual and textural characteristics of the sediment. It is generally a manual procedure. However, digital core descriptions are now required re manage data processing. Hand-written description can be keyed into a computer, but it is tedious and time consuming. Moreover, recording and typing errors can occur. A system is presented for digital description of sediment cores using a bar code principle. It can be used in the laboratory as well as on board vessels. It comprises a box inside which the half-core can be placed. A ruler and several sets of bar codes are printed on the inside box top. Bar codes are...

Monsoon variability and deep oceanic circulation in the western equatorial Pacific over the last climatic cycle: Insights from sedimentary magnetic properties and sortable silt ArchiMer
Kissel, Catherine; Laj, Carlo; Kienast, Markus; Bolliet, Timothe; Holbourn, Ann; Hill, Paul; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Braconnot, Pascale.
Magnetic and grain size properties of a sediment core located in the western equatorial Pacific, off the southeastern tip of the Philippine island of Mindanao, are presented in an effort to reconstruct past changes in the East Asian Monsoon and deep ocean circulation during the last 160 kyrs. The sedimentary concentration of magnetic particles, interpreted to reflect past changes in runoff from Mindanao, varies almost in antiphase with Northern Hemisphere insolation. This suggests that precipitation was lower in the western equatorial Pacific region during boreal insolation maxima and thus corroborates model results showing opposing trends in precipitation between land and the marine realm there. Variations in the grain size distribution of the inorganic...

Size Monotonicity and Stability of the Core in Hedonic Games AgEcon
Dimitrov, Dinko; Chin Sung, Shao.
We show that the core of each strongly size monotonic hedonic game is not empty and is externally stable. This is in sharp contrast to other sufficient conditions for core non-emptiness which do not even guarantee the existence of a stable set in such games.

Status-Seeking in Hedonic Games with Heterogeneous Players AgEcon
Lazarova, Emiliya A.; Dimitrov, Dinko.
We study hedonic games with heterogeneous player types that reflect her nationality, ethnic background, or skill type. Agents' preferences are dictated by status-seeking where status can be either local or global. The two dimensions of status define the two components of a generalized constant elasticity of substitution utility function. In this setting, we characterize the core as a function of the utility's parameter values and show that in all cases the corresponding cores are non-empty. We further discuss the core stable outcomes in terms of their segregating versus integrating properties.

The Maximal Payoff and Coalition Formation in Coalitional Games AgEcon
Zhao, Jingang.
This paper first establishes a new core theorem using the concept of generated payoffs: the TU (transferable utility) core is empty if and only if the maximum of generated payoffs (mgp) is greater than the grand coalition’s payoff v(N), or if and only if it is irrational to split v(N). It then provides answers to the questions of what payoffs to split, how to split the payoff, what coalitions to form, and how long each of the coalitions will be formed by rational players in coalitional TU games. Finally, it obtains analogous results in coalitional NTU (non-transferable utility) games.

Understanding otolith biomineralization processes: new insights into microscale spatial distribution of organic and mineral fractions from Raman microspectrometry ArchiMer
Jolivet, Aurelie; Bardeau, J.f.; Fablet, Ronan; Paulet, Y.m.; De Pontual, Helene.
It is generally accepted that the formation of otolith microstructures (L- and D-zones) and in particular the organic and mineral fractions vary on a daily basis. Raman microspectrometry provides a nondestructive technique that can be used to provide structural information on organic and mineral compounds. We applied it to thin otolith sections of hake in order to address the following issues: (1) the simultaneous characterization of variations in the organic and mineral fractions both in the core area and along successive otolith microstructures; (2) elucidation of significant differences between these fractions; (3) quantification of the effects of etching and staining protocols on otolith structures. The primordium appeared as a punctual area depicting...
